Ticket to Work

Ticket to Work prepares young people for the world of work and provides them with an open employment pathway in their transition from school through a combination of vocational/career development and early contact with work environments.

Specifically, Ticket to Work:

Brings together disability-specific and mainstream representatives from a variety of sectors to work strategically and collaboratively.

Supports young people to gain access to early experiences that positively influence their views of themselves as workers.

Prepares young people with disability for the workplace and gives them an employment pathway that is typical of other young adults.

Increases opportunities for meaningful work experience and learning prior to exiting school.

The Ticket to Work model is based on extensive research into what works.

Ticket to Work is a collaborative approach to placing local High School students with identified barriers in School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) so that they are able to prepare for life after school as independent workers.

Preparing young people through Ticket to work employment services at Ideal Placements

Ticket to Work grew out of research that showed:

In Australia, young people with a disability are more likely to drop out of school early, be excluded from the labour force, have fewer educational qualifications, experience poverty and be socially isolated.

Participation in work experience and employment during secondary school are among the most significant indicators of post-school success for young people with disability.

Young people with disabilities who exit school with a job are more likely to maintain a positive career trajectory than those who do not.

Most workers with disabilities not only do their jobs just as well as those without disability, but they are also often more reliable and take fewer sick days.

It has been shown that students that are participating in a school-based traineeship are 50% more likely to complete schooling and also 400% more likely to be engaged in open employment after school.

IDEAL Placements is the lead agency for this initiative in Mackay, Sarina, Proserpine, Cannonvale, and Bowen. Ticket to Work takes a partnership approach to improve the employment and education outcomes of young students with a disability. Ticket to Work brings together a range of local partners such as:
